They are an alt-country hillbilly love punk rock revolution of the freak folk/Americana variety made flesh for your listening pleasure on a quixotic crusade in the key of life hell-bent on breaking all the world’s hearts open.

Filled with an insatiable desire to explore new forms of musical instrumentation and arrangements, the Evangenitals take listeners on a journey of passion and creative freedom, embracing all of life as source material, from the mundane to the sublime.

The Evangenitals were midwifed in a defunct bowling alley in the gritty Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, where they gave their first performance for a small mixed group of rehab refugees and listless drunks from an adjoining bar.
Evangenitals Family Tree Festival

For the past six years, LA's hillbilly jazz folk/Americana alt-country hillbilly love-punk revolutionists have made a mark on the music scene by generating some of the most profound sounds from a musical vessel. Co-founded by lead singer/songwriter Juli Crockett and opera/jazz singer Lisa Dee, this unique combination of seven souls have continuously converted the unsuspecting masses by stirring their pot of stellar influences into a sonic experiment of musical realism. Through it all, let us not forget that the secret to the Evangenitals magnetism are the pieces of the puzzle - the seven individuals who are the sum of the whole. Now, for the first time all the members who bring their talent and enthusiasm to the Evangenitals will harmonically converge upon the Blue Star for an all-day, outdoor festival, showcasing each Genital's alter ego. Here is a unique opportunity for your lightbulb moment, answering that age old musical question "How the hell do they do that?"

5:30pm: EVANGINA: (with Lisa Dee & Juli Crockett from Evangenitals) Evangina is the duo of the two co-founding members of Evangenitals. Together, they will guide you through a smattering of deliciously acoustic chick-hymns. http://www.myspace.com/weareevangina

6:00pm: POOR COW: (with Lisa Dee from Evangenitals) Last year, Evangenitals had the opportunity to play and attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland where the music of Donovan is practically their National Anthem. Fulfilling her gypsy aspirations, Lisa Dee will get in touch with her inner flower child before your very eyes.

6:30pm: ODIOUS ARI and the SYPHILITIC SYNCOPATHS: (with Ari DeSano, Andrea Baker, Lisa Dee and Juli Crockett from Evangenitals) Hearkening back to the age of parlor songs and three penny operas, comes Odious Ari. Singing the legends of ragtime, this good time gal and her vaudevillian company produce a cacophony of tin pan alley ditties sure to usher in a stampede of charleston kicks. http://www.odiousari.com/

7:30pm: EZ TIGER: (with Kristy McInnis from Evangenitals) EZ Tiger has crafted their own unique rock and roll sound. Channeling the irresistible pop mentality of T-Rex, coupled with the girl-gang authority of The Runaways, these 'tude queens deliver a brand of rock with chops and swagger. http://www.myspace.com/eztigermusic

8:30pm: HALLOWED ENGINE: (with Laurie Es from Evangenitals) Hallowed Engine's live shows are a unique amalgamation of thick riffs coupled with nonstop energy. These volume worshippers mix strong female fronted vocals atop heavy southern fried anthems for a potion that's sure to bring you back for sloppy seconds. http://www.myspace.com/hallowedengine

9:30pm: HONKYSTOMP: (with Andrea Baker from Evangenitals) Honkystomp, the original 7 piece bucket of Southern Fried, Countrified, Funkified, Rock and Roll! The brain child of Galactic Dan, Honkystomp is a refreshing blend of musical madness. Combining instruments normally associated with bluegrass and Country, (i.e., Banjo, fiddle and harmonica), with Heavy Rock and Funk Backdrops Honkystomp has created an entirely new musical Genre. http://www.honkystomp.com/ http://www.myspace.com/honkystomp

10:30pm: UNPOPABLE (aka: BALLOON BASS): (with Henry Bermudez from Evangenitals) The Balloon Bass is a musical instrument made of one round balloon and two skinny, twisting balloons. It is built by using one inflated and twisted skinny balloon to create a resonator that connects the string to the round balloon. When Addi Somekh plucks the resonated balloon bass string, the sound brings to mind the halcyon undertones of The Residents or Snakefinger. The layers of sounds filtering through this membrane, create a music that defies categorization. http://www.balloonbass.com/

11:30: EVANGENITALS: (with Juli Crockett, Lisa Dee, Henry Bermudez, Andrea Baker, Ari DeSano, Laurie Es & Kristy McInnis) Imagine if Johnny Cash, Bob Marley and Joan of Arc were one woman. Now, imagine that woman gathering a band of eclectic musicians on a crusade to expand the bounds of Country music. Described as “Cosmic Square Dance” and “Hillbilly Jazz”, Juli Crockett and The Evangenitals are opening people’s minds and ears to a new style of Southern music. Though based in the roots of Country, the band incorporates a wide variety of influences, instrumentation and styles. The result is a genre-hopping bull ride that has music fans and critics buzzing in Los Angeles.

http://www.evangenitals.com/

http://www.myspace.com/evangenitals

http://www.facebook.com/evangenitals

Whirlwind Weekend of Wonder-Fullness

This is going to be quite a long weekend... and a great one!

On Friday I'm heading up to Sin City with Evangenitals drummer George Bernardo to play with our *other* band, San Diego's "Cash'd Out" -- the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band! George is their skin-beating rhythm train and I'm their dress-wearin', hair-curlin' June Carter Cash. We're playing at the Icehouse in Vegas on Friday, and then heading to the Goathead Salon in Phoenix for a gig on Saturday. It's my first time on the road with Cash'd Out and I'm EXCITED!!! It is NOT my first time on the road with Georgie; we spent a month together in The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah bus!

So, if any Evangenitals fans out there live in Vegas or Phoenix, come and see Georgie and I get our Johnny Cash on! I may be able to score a couple of comp tickets for each show... so hit me up if you'd like to go.

Sunday morning I fly back to LA in time for the Evangenitals to rock the back porch of the Echo for the Grand Ole Echo Country Music Jamboree. We're assembling a crew of extended Evangenitals family members for an acoustic hootenanny out by the barbecue. I'll admit it, the 3 hours of music that we're going to be playing will serve a double purpose: 1) it will be an awesome fun music time, and 2) it will be a good rehearsal for our "plugged in" show the VERY NEXT NIGHT at the Bordello.

Yes, you thought this weekend of madness would be over with the show on Sunday, but no! We continue...

On Monday night, Lisa Dee and I are singing with Artichoke at the Silverlake Lounge (9pm) and then running over to the Bordello for an Evangenitals show at 11pm. At the Bordello we're playing with an awesome Western Swing 3-piece from Austin, TX called "Shotgun Party" whom I highly suggest y'all come out and give a listen to. They've got the goods! :-)

On Tuesday, we're auditioning a potential new bass player to bring in the extended Evangenital family fold! Yee-haw! I get very excited about meeting new talented people.

On Wednesay, I will try to rest up for the NEXT weekend which is full of improv shows with my group HAMMERSPACE and an Evangenitals gig at the Room 5 Lounge where we'll be debuting a handful of BRAND NEW SONGS that I've been tinkering away at in my room! I hope that many loving and supportive friends come out for that show, cuz I'm going to be SCARED!!!

Life is good. Love is good. It's all good.

Love,
Juli

Life is full. Full full full! Almost done moving into my new place, the car broke down (but I've got a big tax return coming in that will pay for it!), LOTS of rehearsals for plays and gigs and music and improv.... and now, on Monday I'm going to be driving down to San Diego with Georgie to audition to be the June Carter for the best-ever Johnny Cash cover band "Cash'd Out". Anyone that knows me seems to think that this is the "day job" I was BORN to have... it's only a question of me not freaking out and dazzlin' them in the audition. Heck, it would be awesome to be in ANOTHER band with George Bernardo, that's for sure. :-)

Before that big day, though, I've got two shows in one night (Friday the 28th) -- Artichoke at La Casa Blue (9:30pm) and Hammerspace (my Improv team) at iO WEST (Andy Dick Experimental Black Box at 11pm)-- to get through. It's a lot, and I'm loving it.

Saturday and Sunday we have to officially finish moving, clean out the old apartment (throw a couple of rehearsals and a class show for our Improv class on Sunday) and turn in the keys Monday morning. Then, at around 1pm I'm jumping in a car with Georgie to head down to San Diego... and DESTINY! In the meantime, I've got all my Johnny and June tunes on repeat play and I'm getting ready for greatness.

Say a prayer for me. :-)

- Juli

My life offline... I've missed you

Hey there!

It is I, Juli Crockett, lead singer of the Evangenitals, writing you after a relatively long web-absence that truly tested my mettle in these ultra-connected net-worked-webbed times.

I have been without internet capabilities for over a week, however, tonight all was made right again when the nice folks at the phone company finally turned the internet on in my new place. Yes! I said new place! 1/2 the rent and double the lovely... what more could a gal ask for?

Much has happened since I last wrote... our trip to Austin was amazing, I started playing an electric guitar, the Evangenitals played a fundraiser for the Open Fist Theater with Henry Bermudez on guitar and Joey Ninja on bass, I sang in a show with the super-groovy group Artichoke, my car broke down, I changed residence, and now... this Friday night Lisa Dee and I (aka Evangina) will BOTH be joining Artichoke at La Casa Blue in Highland Park -- demonstrating our backup vocalization skills, our tambourine skills, our whirling tubes skills, and some other tricks-o-the-trade.

Here's the info and lineup for that:

friday @ 9:30
la casa blue
5930 york blvd
highland park, ca 90042
free, all ages!
(alcohol with i.d.)

8:30 braille
9:30 artichoke
10:30 box violet
11:30 bright million

Now, Artichoke will be going on at 9:30 sharp because I have ANOTHER show (Improvin', not Rockin') at the iO WEST in Hollywood with my new Improv team Hammerspace. You're welcome to check that out too, if you're into that kind of stuff. It's free. It's at 11pm. We're occasionally funny. :-)

So that's the news. Look for some Evangenitals shows coming soon in the LA area, a possible West Coast mini-tour in May, and more miracles unfolding than you can imagine.

Love,
Juli & the Genitals
http://www.evangenitals.com
http://www.myspace.com/evangenitals
