Evangenitals & Cash'd Out at the Belly Up! - October 6, 2009

On Saturday October 10th the Evangenitals will play our biggest show yet! We are opening for Cash'd Out, the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band (that Evangenital Juli Crockett sings the June Carter parts with!) at San Diego's BEST live music venue -- The Belly Up!

The incredible Bill Cardinal is also on the bill, and DJ Gonzo will be spinning all the great cowboy classics between sets. The Belly Up is a beautiful venue with amazing sound, an awesome lineup, and a HUGE opportunity for the Evangenitals to shine our light on San Diego.

If you are in the area, please come see the show! If you know anyone in the area, please help us spread the word!

If you're in LA and would like to carpool, please email us! We are organizing a carvan to cruise down family-style. :-)

Tickets are cheaper if you buy 'em in advance, and Cash'd Out shows at the Belly Up often tend to sell out... so get your tix here: http://ping.fm/bukS0
Doors at 8pm, music starts at 9pm. Come and see the whole damn show, cuz it's all gonna ROCK!

What a great day to be an Evangenital!

If you're too far to make it, you can grab the new EP off CDBaby, throw on the tunes Saturday night, close your eyes and be with us in spirit. We need your love: http://ping.fm/LESTS

Whirlwind Weekend of Wonder-Fullness - June 4, 2008

This is going to be quite a long weekend... and a great one!

On Friday I'm heading up to Sin City with Evangenitals drummer George Bernardo to play with our *other* band, San Diego's "Cash'd Out" -- the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band! George is their skin-beating rhythm train and I'm their dress-wearin', hair-curlin' June Carter Cash. We're playing at the Icehouse in Vegas on Friday, and then heading to the Goathead Salon in Phoenix for a gig on Saturday. It's my first time on the road with Cash'd Out and I'm EXCITED!!! It is NOT my first time on the road with Georgie; we spent a month together in The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah bus!

So, if any Evangenitals fans out there live in Vegas or Phoenix, come and see Georgie and I get our Johnny Cash on! I may be able to score a couple of comp tickets for each show... so hit me up if you'd like to go.

Sunday morning I fly back to LA in time for the Evangenitals to rock the back porch of the Echo for the Grand Ole Echo Country Music Jamboree. We're assembling a crew of extended Evangenitals family members for an acoustic hootenanny out by the barbecue. I'll admit it, the 3 hours of music that we're going to be playing will serve a double purpose: 1) it will be an awesome fun music time, and 2) it will be a good rehearsal for our "plugged in" show the VERY NEXT NIGHT at the Bordello.

Yes, you thought this weekend of madness would be over with the show on Sunday, but no! We continue...

On Monday night, Lisa Dee and I are singing with Artichoke at the Silverlake Lounge (9pm) and then running over to the Bordello for an Evangenitals show at 11pm. At the Bordello we're playing with an awesome Western Swing 3-piece from Austin, TX called "Shotgun Party" whom I highly suggest y'all come out and give a listen to. They've got the goods! :-)

On Tuesday, we're auditioning a potential new bass player to bring in the extended Evangenital family fold! Yee-haw! I get very excited about meeting new talented people.

On Wednesay, I will try to rest up for the NEXT weekend which is full of improv shows with my group HAMMERSPACE and an Evangenitals gig at the Room 5 Lounge where we'll be debuting a handful of BRAND NEW SONGS that I've been tinkering away at in my room! I hope that many loving and supportive friends come out for that show, cuz I'm going to be SCARED!!!

Life is good. Love is good. It's all good.

Love,
Juli

The Bruise of Rock - March 29, 2008

Tonight I sang backup for Artichoke and played the Tambourine. That may sound like a walk in the park... HOWEVER... the way *I* play the tambourine is a full contact sport! Check out the battle wounds:

You can imagine how messed up I look after playing the tambourine on Gasoline with the Evangenitals... with my groin. Youch!

After the Artichoke show I ran off to Hollywood and performed Improv at the iO WEST, then I ate a Vegan burrito from Cinnamon in Highland Park. Now I'm going to bed. I think I've earned it. :-)

Love,
Me

Cash'd Out - March 28, 2008

Life is full. Full full full! Almost done moving into my new place, the car broke down (but I've got a big tax return coming in that will pay for it!), LOTS of rehearsals for plays and gigs and music and improv.... and now, on Monday I'm going to be driving down to San Diego with Georgie to audition to be the June Carter for the best-ever Johnny Cash cover band "Cash'd Out". Anyone that knows me seems to think that this is the "day job" I was BORN to have... it's only a question of me not freaking out and dazzlin' them in the audition. Heck, it would be awesome to be in ANOTHER band with George Bernardo, that's for sure. :-)

Before that big day, though, I've got two shows in one night (Friday the 28th) -- Artichoke at La Casa Blue (9:30pm) and Hammerspace (my Improv team) at iO WEST (Andy Dick Experimental Black Box at 11pm)-- to get through. It's a lot, and I'm loving it.

Saturday and Sunday we have to officially finish moving, clean out the old apartment (throw a couple of rehearsals and a class show for our Improv class on Sunday) and turn in the keys Monday morning. Then, at around 1pm I'm jumping in a car with Georgie to head down to San Diego... and DESTINY! In the meantime, I've got all my Johnny and June tunes on repeat play and I'm getting ready for greatness.

Say a prayer for me. :-)

My life offline... I've missed you - March 27, 2008

Hey there!

It is I, Juli Crockett, lead singer of the Evangenitals, writing you after a relatively long web-absence that truly tested my mettle in these ultra-connected net-worked-webbed times.

I have been without internet capabilities for over a week, however, tonight all was made right again when the nice folks at the phone company finally turned the internet on in my new place. Yes! I said new place! 1/2 the rent and double the lovely... what more could a gal ask for?

Much has happened since I last wrote... our trip to Austin was amazing, I started playing an electric guitar, the Evangenitals played a fundraiser for the Open Fist Theater with Henry Bermudez on guitar and Joey Ninja on bass, I sang in a show with the super-groovy group Artichoke, my car broke down, I changed residence, and now... this Friday night Lisa Dee and I (aka Evangina) will BOTH be joining Artichoke at La Casa Blue in Highland Park -- demonstrating our backup vocalization skills, our tambourine skills, our whirling tubes skills, and some other tricks-o-the-trade.

Here's the info and lineup for that:

friday @ 9:30
la casa blue
5930 york blvd
highland park, ca 90042
free, all ages!
(alcohol with i.d.)

8:30 braille
9:30 artichoke
10:30 box violet
11:30 bright million

Now, Artichoke will be going on at 9:30 sharp because I have ANOTHER show (Improvin', not Rockin') at the iO WEST in Hollywood with my new Improv team Hammerspace. You're welcome to check that out too, if you're into that kind of stuff. It's free. It's at 11pm. We're occasionally funny. :-)

So that's the news. Look for some Evangenitals shows coming soon in the LA area, a possible West Coast mini-tour in May, and more miracles unfolding than you can imagine.

Love,
Juli & the Genitals

What's Up? - March 20, 2008

Last Friday night Lisa Dee, myself, (that's Evangina!), guitarist Henry Bermudez, and Timothy Sellers of Artichoke all jumped in a car and drove to Austin to catch a taste of SXSW and play a day show on Sunday. It was a much-need breaking out and breaking away from the day to day, and also a grand display of willingness and mild insanity. The whole thing made me indescribably happy.

Brian and Jerimi, a WONDERFUL couple who restore any lagging faith that any of us could have in humanity and the generosity of the spirit, put us up in Austin and took great care of us. I barely know these folks, and yet they opened their hearts, ears, home, and fridge to us... for fun and for free. Incredible. I also discovered that Austin has free health insurance for musicians and the audiences actually TIP... what am I doing here? I love LA. It's twisted.

It was great to play with Izzy Cox. I've missed her. She is a powerful performer and I look forward to doing more shows with her when she comes out to LA again. We also DEFINITELY plan to return to Austin next year, if not sooner. Now that Henry is going to be playing with us, we are indeed a road-hungry band... we want to play play PLAY and bring the Evangenital joy to every pair of ears that will listen.

I'm going to be posting the photo-journal from the Austin trip on Flickr real soon. I'll post links here when I do.

Tonight we played a fundraiser show with Veruca Salt in downtown LA and we debuted a never-before-seen/heard Evangenitals lineup featuring Joey Ninja of Ninja Academy on bass and the aforementioned Henry Bermudez on lead guitar. It rocked my socks off! I am excited to be revisiting our old tunes with new energy and explore and reinterpret them -- stretch 'em to the snapping point and see what their spine looks like. Constantly changing, exploring, questioning, enjoying, refreshing... I dig it. "The Hole" almost burst into a Reggae jam tonight, people. It was AWESOME!!!

So, the short version is: the flow is flowing once again, the universe is giving me the green light on all things, it seems, and I am revved up and ready to GROW! The party is about to get started, and you're all always invited.

Love, always and already,
Juli

McCann - January 26, 2008

I can tell from the "backend" reports on our website that someone out there has been searching for the lyrics to the song "McCann" -- written about the Irish writer and awesome human Colum McCann, whom I met while he was a professor at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where I'm pursuing my PhD.

I'm guessing this may have to do with the fact that Evangina just started playing this song out and about town this fair 2008. Though written long ago, for whatever reason the Evangenitals never picked this tune up and ran with it. It is, however, just folksy and forlorn enough for Evangina to let it emanate from our lovesick breasts, so we have been doing so -- from Mr T's Bowl to the Hyperion Tavern. (So, Silverlake, if you've been smelling some melancholy and Irish jigs in the air lately, maybe it's the spirit of McCann seeping into the groundwater.)

Always quick to respond to public demands, I have gone ahead and posted the lyrics for the McCann song. You can find them here: "McCann, McCann..."
Love,
Juli

Happy Birthday to YOU! - January 19, 2008

Holy Moly... I think a new business for the Evangenitals/Evangina may have just been born!

Today Lisa & I provided a few hours of entertainment for a kid's birthday party in Sherman Oaks and it was friggin' AWESOME!!!

We did clean-versions of a ton of Evangenitals & Evangina tunes, some cover songs (including the debut of some new Dead Milkmen covers) and ended the whole thing with some rockin' version of classics like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "The Wheels on the Bus"... we even got to pass the mic off to the kids for some rousing renditions of the "Alphabet Song" and "You Are My Sunshine".

With 30+ parents present, many of whom said this was the best birthday party they'd ever been to, and the 20-odd kids who absolutely LOVED it, I'm thinking we may be getting some phone calls for future birthday party business. :-)

A major highlight of the day was when one of the kids asked for a "really fast song about a race car" so they could run around in a circle really fast... after a few clarifying questions on what he wanted out of the song, I composed "The Race Car song" on the spot. Lisa was a champ, right there with me on accompaniment, and all present agreed that we could make a lot of dough if we did a kids album. Suddenly Gwendolyn is making a whole lot more sense to me.

Now, on to the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade! Come and see us on The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah bus tomorrow at 11:30am!

Good Feeling - January 6, 2008

There's nothing better than receiving a heartfelt "Thanks" from the SOUNDMAN after a gig.

Those poor folks have to listen to every single band that drags their gear onto the stage... for better or for worse. So when a worn and torn up soundman wants to give us an earnest thanks and a big hug for bringing something beautiful to their club, it really means a lot to me.

That's what happened last night after Evangina closed the bill at Mr T's Bowl. Arlo and I had ourselves a real "moment" after the show. I really love that guy, and I love playing that venue. I can always just plug in and trust him to take care of the sound. I've yet to get very involved with monitor levels and such, as I'm always just eager to start playing, so it always sounds weird to me onstage (too much ME most of the time) however, when it was all over we had nothing but rave reviews from the crowd about how great it sounded.

It was a really fun and tender set, with Ramones and Misfits covers - Evangina Style! -- and Sarah Peters (from the Road to Oprah tour) guesting on bass and violin. We played some new versions of old songs, and some old songs that had never been played live before (like McCann). What's more, I played the electric guitar that Albert gave me as a present, and Lisa Dee played the bass (awesomely!) for the first time ever.

The audience stayed up late (we played at midnight) and was super-lovely. We brought the "instrument box" and had folks sitting down in front playing along.... just like old times. The whole scene warmed my heart and got me real excited about 2008.

It was a perfect show to kick off the New Year. And there's more on the horizon... we may be playing the Hyperion Tavern on Thursday, the Barn Burner on Friday, and we're even playing a birthday party for a friend. Creative juices are flowing, we're growing, and all is well on the Evangina front.

Everlovin'
Juli

Happy New Year Everybody! - December 30, 2007

2007 was incredible, and 2008 is showing signs of being even better. So much love, so much life to live, so much goodness and greatness all around. I'm digging it. :-)

We love you, always and already. Thanks for everything. We look forward to seeing you on the other side in 2008.

Evangina @ TruXtop Gallery - November 10, 2007

The Evangina show last night at TruXtop gallery was awesome. It's always a crazy and incredibly vulnerable experience when Lisa and I strip the Evangenitals act back to its barest bones and do the femme duet thing. Luckily it's also always a really beautiful and validating experience as well, as folks really respond to the sweet simplicity of our two voices and the minimal guitar accompaniment.

I was playing a new (to me) guitar, a really awesome junior Epiphone electric that super friend and super fan Albert gave me as a present. I am loving its sound. I mainly played bass lines and finger-picked on the tunes while Lisa covered the strumming and rhythm parts. It was super-intimate, super-tender, and ridiculously fun. We brought along our bin of play-along instruments and closed out with "Home"... which has now become a tradition since the Road to Oprah tour.

We did a few new tunes/covers... including the Ramones, Misfits, and some Bob Dylan. Good times! The art show was great, and I loved the gallery/space. Be sure to pay them a visit, check out the art, and support this new gallery. As for Evangina, I'm thinking that we need to get out on the town and play some more gigs. It's really good practice for us to put our asses on the line like that. :-)

We're Back! - November 5, 2007

Evangina hath returned from our Road to Oprah tour with The Evangenitals and The 1 Second Film and we are ready to play you some MUSIC!

We've got some new tunes, some sweet covers of punk classics, and we will be surrounded by some amazing art. Sounds like a good night, eh?

I figure it proves I was working hard. :-)

Thanks to those of you who came out to the show, played along, and for all the hooting and hollering.

If you missed it, this photo set (taken by Patrick Ian Moore) actually gives a pretty good idea of just what went on over there.

Hope to see you all next weekend at the Old Towne Pub. Until then, please enjoy, comment on, spread around all these Evangenitals pics that I've been obsessively uploading onto Flickr.

Busy, busy I bees... - July 7, 2007

So much is going on, I don't have much time to share about it.

I started working full-time with The 1 Second Film, plotting our upcoming Road To Oprah cross-country bio-diesel 10,000+ mile adventure.

The Evangenitals will probably be traveling as "The Love Punks" considering that we're going to be heading straight through the Bible Belt and visiting Oprah Winfrey. We don't want the name of the band to be any sort of distraction from the amazing cause and vision that The 1 Second Film represents.

In other news, I started taking classes at IO West and have become utterly obsessed with long-form improv. Tonight Ptryxxx and I are going to go see "The Lampshades" which stars my improv teacher Scot Robinson (who was also in Anchorman) and Meredith from The Office, aka Kate Flannery.

I have to go to the xBiz summer forum at the HardRock in Vegas next week for my "other" job, and then my sister is getting married in Florida on the 22nd. I saw her wedding website, and it is just plain surreal. This will be the first time in a LONG time that all the Crockett's are going to be in the same place at the same time. Hopefully the wedding cruise doesn't sink and take us all to Davey Jones' locker.

I have to admit thoughts like that when they occur to me, or else I am afraid that they will actually happen, and then I'll be dying thinking, "are you fucking kidding me? I totally called that!"

What else?

After a strange period of seeming song-writer's block, a bunch of new material is starting to flow out of me. I'm writing a new love song about Ptryxxx that has was may be the cutest subtly vegan choral hook that was ever written.

Newlywed Jeff Jones is going to return to the Evangenitals for a mellow yellow coffee house set at Highland Perk on July 28th! I've decided that we're going to make this gig an open-house, sing-a-long, play-a-long, Evan-hootenanny! After so much rocking so far this year (and much more rocking to come with another Molly Malones gig and the Evangenitals playing Universal Citywalk's Block Party on September 1st) we thought it would be nice to have a calm, sit down with coffee evening where we can share favorite songs, simple chords, and tell some stories about how these songs were written and why.

Lastly, I just bought some red and purple vegan/animal friendly Manic Panic hair dye and I'm thinking I may do something crazy with it this weekend. :-)

Let's hear it for the GIRLS! - March 19, 2007

Evangina, also know as the Ladies of the Evangenitals, have received two honors this week over on GarageBand.com where the Evangina track "Time To Go" has been hanging tough in Round 2 of the showcase showdown.

For the week of March 19th, Time To Go was voted "Best Lyrics" and "Best Melody" in the Acoustic genre! Woo hoo!

If you pay a visit to the Evangina page at GarageBand.com you can hear this track and support the ladies. You can also look forward to hearing Time To Go on the much-anticipated 2nd album of the Evangenitals coming out this summer, where it will be a sweet Evangina oasis in the midst of the surging seas of Evangenital Joy!

In other news... major props should go out to the ladies for dressing up and putting on the ritz at the Bordello show last Wednesday night.

For all of you who missed it.... thank heavens for YouTube!!!

Evangina helms the Evangenitals for a Brett-less Presentation! - February 20, 2007

That's right, folks. It's time for another crazy ho-down at the Old Towne Pub with The Purple Gang and The Evangenitals.

There is a rumor going around that we've kicked Brettsky out of the band, but you shouldn't listen to the rumors.. even if we are the ones starting them!

The truth is.... HOLLYWOOD is to blame!

Brettsky's earning his stripes in the wild world of cinema editing, and the Evangenitals are going to have to perservere for one night without their beloved Coach and Master Noodler, Brett P Lyda.
So, here's the plan. We put in a call to some Evangenital Extended Family(tm) and we've got special treats for frequent fliers this show.

Jason Chesney (whom you may remember played bass for us at the infamous Knitting Factory/Trainwreck show) is stepping up on guitar (which you will also hear him playing on the forthcoming 2nd ALBUM of the Evangenitals!) and Dave "Salad" Salardino of UkeFink is making a special appearance on the mandolin!

We're bringing some 1st album gems out of the closet for review (think Quee Queg, Eva!) and also some other tunes that we rarely play for one reason or another.

And if you've been suffering from the short-set blues... we're planning a minimum of 10 songs, starting at 10pm. 10 at 10 sounds good to me.

And then the Purple Gang is going to play, putting us in a delicious aural sandwich betwixt Marty West and the Lower Companions and the Purple Gang. Good company!

And you can see it all for just $7 - $5 w/ flyer. Be sure to tell them that you're there to see the Evangenitals... because we actually get the money at the door when we play the Old Towne Pub, and that money will help make album #2 come out a whole lot sooner!

p.s.
if you have any last minute requests, be sure to send 'em our way!

Famous Author Admits to Loving the Evangenitals in an Interview! - February 6, 2007

Alright... so I'm a geek. But dammit, I get friggin' giddy as hell when a famous author whose work I respect the hell out of drops my name, and the Evangenitals name, as a band that he loves to get crazy to.

Check it out:

"For pure craziness, there are lots of other bands, including one that I can't write to but I've become a big fan; they're called the Evangenitals. They're from Los Angeles. One of the front singers is a former boxer-slash-philosopher. She's a fantastic singer. Her name is Juli Crockett."
Thank you, Colum McCann!

So, the back story to our association is that Colum was actually one of my professors my first year at The European Graduate School in Switzerland where I go every summer to work on my PhD in Philosophy. We had many deep conversations and stayed up late singing Evangenitals' songs and Irish classics with the hoodlums at the best damn theory camp in the Alps.

I even wrote a song about him, that a bunch of us geeks got together and hootenannied often. I'm trying to find a video of it that someone once sent me so I can post it. I know there's an audio recording (bad quality) and I may throw it up online somewhere for the hell of it.

In the meantime, we may just have to revive the song and play it at the next Evangenitals show. It's a damn fine sing along, in the Irish tradition. February 11th - All Star Lanes - Bowling, Drinking, Evangenitals, Sing Alongs, Karoke. Be there.

You can read the full interview with Colum McCann here: http://www.powells.com/interviews/mccann.html
And buy his books while you're at it. They're friggin' amazing.
