McCann

(Juli Crockett and the EGS Allstars)
Juli Crockett
Written in honor of writer Colum McCann
'Twas past midnight, high in the mountains
Darks and lights, a fog rollin' in
Standing still, letting the rain fall
We heard the voice of an Irishman

He told us tales, with songs more than speaking,
Singing his history with other men's words
Hungry for poems, he quotes them from memory
Telling of Fathers and Lovers and Wars

But now he's gone, returned to his family
My whole life long I'll remember his name
He who wrote of Rivers and Railroads
And showed us all they're all the same

McCann, McCann
Until we meet again
McCann, McCann
One damn fine Irishman

Here comes loneliness, here comes wisdom
Here comes memory, here comes a friend
His time here was like a story, and like a story is had to end
In our lives characters enter, for reason, for season, for good
For the short time that he was here with us, he hung on as best as he could

But now he's gone, returned to his family
My whole life long I'll remember his name
He who wrote of Beggars and Dancers
And showed us all we're all the same

McCann, McCann
Until we meet again
McCann, McCann
One damn fine Irishman
